Winding River Pictures

Winding River Pictures was born in 2003 out of a need to tell an important and urgent story. That story turned into Being Caribou- my first feature-length documentary film about a five-month journey my husband, Karsten Heuer, and I did on foot and skis, following the endangered Porcupine Caribou Herd through the Yukon and Alaska. The film, and Karsten’s book, reached a lot of people who made a positive contribution to the ongoing campaign to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

A few years downstream our son, Zev, was born and when he was just two years old Karsten and I figured it was time for his first big adventure. My second big film, Finding Farley, came out of that cross-Canada journey by canoe and sailboat to meet one of our childhood heros- Farley Mowat.

Now, in addition to filmmaking, I’ve ventured into the world of interactive media and the Web. It all started when I saw some of the compelling wildlife images captured by biologists’ camera traps where we live near Banff, Alberta. It took some serious meandering to find the story, but it’s a good one in the end, and I hope Bear 71 helps save some grizzly bears in the future.

I am also filming, editing and posting short videos on the Web for wildlife researchers and others interested in promoting and sharing their work.

I am pleased to offer my services as a filmmaker, cameraperson and editor. I invite you to learn more about me on this site as well at Necessary Journeys.
